Whitstable to Stansted taxi, plus Luton and London City: three routes compared

Gatwick and Heathrow are not the only choices from Whitstable. Plenty of short-haul and business routes leave from the three airports north and east of London, and the right one depends on the flight, the hour and how long you are happy to sit in a car. This guide compares a Whitstable to Stansted taxi with the drives to Luton and London City.

All three involve getting across or under the Thames, which brings its own timings and charges. Here is what each run looks like from a CT5 address.

Three airports, three different drives

Express Travel Kent publishes these typical times from Whitstable: London City 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, Stansted 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, and Luton 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes. London City is the nearest of the three by road, and Luton is the longest of the five airport runs Express Travel Kent publishes for the town.

Each starts on the A299 and picks up the M2 at Brenley Corner. They part company at the river: Stansted and Luton cross it at Dartford, while London City is reached through one of the road tunnels in east London.

The Whitstable to Stansted taxi route

For Stansted the car runs up the M2, crosses the Thames at Dartford, follows the M11 north and leaves it for the A120 on the final approach. It is a motorway run for nearly all of its length, and the typical time from Whitstable is 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.

Stansted's drop-off area, Express Set Down, is directly outside Departures. It has no barriers and the airport charges for it, with payment made online afterwards. For collections, the airport's Short Stay car parks are the ones meant for meeting arriving passengers, and its Mid Stay car park offers a free drop-off period with a shuttle bus to the terminal.

Dartford: the crossing on the way north

The Dartford Crossing is charged between 6am and 10pm every day, weekends and bank holidays too; outside those hours there is no charge to pay. Tolls on the journey can be added to a fare where they apply, so a pickup that reaches the crossing in the small hours may not meet a charge at all. Ask when you book how it applies to your journey.

The crossing is also where the M25 is at its busiest. Friday afternoons and the first days of the school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes to the drive, so for a Stansted or Luton flight at those times, set the pickup earlier.

Luton: the longest of the five airport runs

Luton also starts with the Dartford Crossing, then follows the M25 round to the M1 and leaves it at junction 10, about two miles from the airport. At 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes it is the longest airport drive from Whitstable, so a dawn departure means a pickup in the middle of the night.

Luton's Drop Off and Pick Up Zone is outside the terminal. It is cashless and barrier-free, cameras read number plates, and the maximum stay is 30 minutes. Terminal Car Park 1 is about four minutes' walk from the terminal building.

Whitstable to London City Airport: short run, tunnel choice

London City is the quickest of the three, typically 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes from Whitstable. The car takes the M2 and the A2 towards London and goes under the Thames through the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel. Both tunnels have been charged since 7 April 2025, between 6am and 10pm, and like any toll on the journey the charge can be added to the fare where it applies.

The airport's drop-off zone has a 10-minute limit and drivers may not wait in the vehicle there, so drop-offs are quick. For a day trip to a meeting abroad, that brisk arrival and the shorter drive are the attraction.

Which one suits your flight?

If the same destination is offered from several airports, compare the whole trip rather than the ticket alone. An extra hour in the car each way, plus an earlier pickup, can outweigh a cheaper seat.

  • London City: the shortest typical drive, with a tunnel charge in the daytime
  • Stansted: a straightforward motorway run north by Dartford and the M11
  • Luton: the longest drive, worth it when the flight or timing is right

Coming back to CT5

The arrangements on the way home are the same at all three. Book with your flight number; the flight is tracked and the collection follows the actual landing time. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board and helps with the bags, and the first 45 minutes after an international landing, or 30 after a domestic one, are free.

The fixed fare is set for the car before you travel and does not change for a slow M25, a diversion or a midnight landing. What can be added is waiting beyond the free time, unbooked stops, a big change of route on the way, and parking fees or tolls where they apply.
